A closely guarded secret for
Honda's Alabama operations is starting to emerge, as a pre-production version of the
redesigned 2011 Odyssey has been spotted on the roads around the automaker's factory in Lincoln.
A
Birmingham News photographer caught the updated model on a drive from
Lincoln to Coldwater, near Oxford, one of the regular routes employees
use to test new vehicles.
Mass production of the new
minivan, which has a lower height, wider body and less boxy shape than its predecessor, is expected to begin in about three weeks.
All of the vehicles built in Lincoln, including the
Odyssey,
Pilot SUV,
Ridgeline pickup and
Accord V-6 sedan, go through road tests and driving evaluations, said plant spokesman Mark Morrison.
The
Odyssey
has been the best-selling minivan in the United States the past two
years, and there's a lot riding on the redesign. Toyota recently
launched an updated version of its Sienna minivan, and the two vehicles
are expected to battle for customers.
